tennis championship.

To-day Shields and Parker provided a sensation equal to that of Turnbull and Quist at Wimbledon, when the American pair beat Keith Gledhill and Ellsworth Vines in the semi- final round in a five set match.

Shield and Parker won by

3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. The match was featured by an amazing recovery on the part of the winners. Gledhill and Vines, strongly fancied for the cham-1 plonship, had the match practical ly in their pockets. They were leading by two sets and then just wilted before their compatriots" attack.

ONE PAIR IN IT. Keeping their mistakes to the minimum, Shields and Parker adopted a line of attack which brooked no opposition, and their dazzling net play swept Vines and Gledhill off the court.

Once the winners-had captured the third set there was only one pair in it, and they went on to secure the remaining sets for the mutch dropping only five games on the way,

Several good times were put up and some interesting diving was seen for a special trophy, the Highlanders scoring 279 to the East Lancs' 277 and the Small Units' 247.

L/C. Filden recorded very good| time for, the 100 yards Breast stroke, covering the three laps of the pool in 84.4/5 seconds, and revealing that he is of champion- ship class as the local champion- ship record is only 80-1/6 seconds,

Pie McPhee proved very suc cessful in the straight swimming events winning the two laps in 41 seconds while he also took the 100 yards in 70 seconds. Cpl. Kildne won the 200 yards free style in 2 This provides additional interest minutes 44 seconds which is fair to..the final.
