CITY HALL SITE COMPLICATION
Hidden Mysteries of Wardley Street
HARBOUR. PIPE LINE. DIVERSION
A complication has entered into the purchase of Wardley Street by the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for the pur- pose of its now building, which, was unsuspected, by most re- sidents.
Under Wardley Street run the Harbour pipe line, a storm water! drain from the Peak, and various ] cables and pipes of public utility companies such as the Telephone, Flectric and Gas_companies.
These all require to be divert- ed and before the task is com- pleted, it may prove a fairly cost- ly business. The Telegraph under- stands that the cost will be borne by Government, The Telephone Company will be given fair com- pensation for the cost of moving their cables.
The work has already com- menced. The relaying of the pipe line will involve three right- angle bends in the vicinity of the City Hall against one at present. TEMPORARY ROAD.
The Bank scheme includes building over Wardley Street and of necessity all drains and pipes. have to be removed, and an alter- native passageway provided.
To this end a temporary road, 13'6" wide, is now being con- structed between the remaining portion of the old City Hall and the new Bank site to carry the pipes.
From the bottom of Wardley Street the scheme provides for the diversion of the Harbour pipe line, the storm water drain and the Telophone cables eastwards along Des Voeux Road to the tem porary roadway and then through the new road to Queen's Road.
At the top, the Harbour Pipo line and the "drain" will be cons tinued westwards along Queon's Road and will connect up with the former pipes at the top of Ward- loy Street,

NORFOLK A HEAVY SUFFERER
WASHINGTON, AUG. 23.
ENORMOUS DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE BY A HURRICANE WHICH SWEPT THE EASTERN COAST OF THE UNITED STATES, CARRYING AWAY PIERS, WRECKING HUNDREDS OF HOUSES, AND TAKING A HEAVY TOLL" OF SMALL CRAFT IN HARBOURS.
The American steamer, Madison, with thirty- seven passengers on board, was caught in the thick of the gale and it lies disabled off Cape Charles, Virginia.
The United States cruiser Indianapolis, one of the latest of America's warships, has been ordered to stand by to receive distress signals from the Madison. Two U.S. coastguard vessels are along side the ship.
The Virginia coast has been desolated by the storm. It is impossible at this early stage to gain a coherent idea of the havoc wreaked and the number of casualties is unknown.
Early-estimates, however, reveal that the damage runs into millions of dollars. In the city of Norfolk, Virginia, alone the damage, is estimated at over $2,000,000.
Early reports suggest that Norfolk was worst hit by the hurricane, which was the worst in living ex- perience in the region and swept up the coast as far as Washington, where the streets were flooded and trees were uprooted in the vicinity of the White House.
In Norfolk, the resport known as Virginia Beach and the suburb of Willoughby are reported to have been completely wrecked.-Reuter.
An unconfirmed wireless report says that the town of Salisbury in Maryland has been practically wiped out by the hurricane.
