Overworking Mother's Little Helper

By Oliver Roberta Burton

"Nettie, take-out -this-- rubbish, I'm tired now and I have to dò som: telephoning."

Mrs. Smith untied her apron and hung it up.

When Nettle had Onishtd her task, her mother called: "Nettie, the front verandah is covered with flies where the baby broke his bot- tie. Get a mop and some water and wipe it up." Then she turned bank to the phone.

It took Nettie half an hour to do what her mother could have done in five minutes, but she was only ter vears old.

"Can I go over to play with Helen?" she asked then.

"Wait-there's something else I want you to do." Her mother pursed her lips and thought hard. There was really nothing in her mind at the minute but she knew there must be something. "Ob yes! The bird cage! It has to be cleaned."

"I'm always afraid he'll get out like he did the other day."

"He won't get out. What's that on your leg?"

Eventually the lex was fixed and the hird-cage cleaned. This pro- cess took another hour.

"Can I go over to Holen's and play, mother?"

"No. not now. You should have" gone after lunch. Now the baby's awake and I have an errand to do. You'll have to give him his bottle and watch him till I get back."

At five o'clock Mrs. Smith return ed, hot and weary.

"The baby cried the whole time and I had to wheel him,"

"Well then-set the table. 1 can't stand up another minute."

"Can I get dressed first? Helen's got on a new pink."

"You'll have to do the dishes. I'm ton tired, I've been on my feet the whole blessed day."

Reproved by Parente. "Why don't you let Nettie help. you more?" said Mr. Smith that night on the porch. · She's old enough now."

Mrs. Smith sighed. "What can a child of ten do? She's always wanting to go over to Helen's."

"Well, if I were here she'd help. Nettie, you must help your mother; more."!

"Yes," said Nettle. "Come un over. Nettle," called
