CONTRACT CONSIGNEES' NOTICES.

BRIDGE

By W. E. McKenney

I am pleased to present to you to-day ono of our new master players in the person of Samuel Fry who, with his teammates, re- cently won the All-American Con tract Team-of-four Champlonship Mr. Fry well demonstrates the type of bridge that Is played by the strong group of contract play ers at Deal, N. J., headed by P. Hal Sims. It was with this group that Mr. Fry as a youngster first played, and to-day he ranks as one of the youngest of champions.

Mr. Fry then bid twò no trump, Mr. South bid three spades and Fry had a close question to decide whether this was A. nine or a ten-trick hand. It looked more. simple to him to make nine tricks and so, instead of bidding four spades, he went three no trump.

East opened the six of hearts. West played the jack and Mr. Fry won with the queen. He immediate ly saw that four spades Was

made spread and even though he three no trump he would have a bad acore on the bourd. His only chance, therefore, was to try to make four no trump.

This could only be accomplished by establishing another heart trick. However, Mr. Fry realized that if he led a heart immediately hís op- ponents would start the diamond suit and then-even-game-could-nol- bo mude.

He therefore decided on a little strategy and led a club, winning in dummy with the king and then West leading a small diamond. played low and Mr. Fry played the queen, East winning with the nee
