Stomachs Are "Tricky"

in the Summer

By Olive Roberts Barton

In Ammor there is likely to be more stomach trouble among chill. ren than in winter,

Muthers are inclined to attribute this to the heat, and in a way, hot weather is indeed responsible, But not as directly as may be imagined. However heat is indirectly respon sible because it brings in ite trial many things that are not so likely to happen in cooler weather

Ona is the natural desire for fon- water. Cold water and ice-watari are different things. Also there in a tremendotts difference between drinking either of them slowly and gulping them down.

Pure water may be kept in covered containers near the ice. This is cokt enough for children.

Gulping Is Dangerous

When they come in overheated, don't let them gup this cooling draft down by the tumblerful. A mouthful or two, then a pause. This is the way to teach children; to drink. A moderato amount of water with meala is all right, but in hot weather they are likely to sit. down at the table and toss bff n glassful or two of ice-water before, they eat a bile of food.

Don't let them do it. And thy to get them cooled off a bit, as well as quiet and rested before they ent The combination of excitement, over-heating, and ice-water would knock out an ostrich's stomach. And tlon't allow them to drink so much water they won't take their milk.

Give Them Sweets Sparingly. Another thing about summer is the ubiquity of sweet things. Now, children do need simple sweets. Pura candy, pure ice-cream, and Kimplo cake without shortening won't hart them.

But to run off and buy cones, anil and prepared confections awcota, ufa dozen varieties every little while is going to load up their systems with carbohydrates.
