SPANISH GUARD
ATTACKED
Washington, July 16. Mrs. Clinton Lockwood, membor of a socially prominent family in Springfield, Mass., is being held in a gaol at Palma, Island of Major- ca, and efforts of the United States! Government to obtain hör rolease have bben futile, the State Do- partment revealed to-day.
With Mrs. Lockwood are four American men, all of whom are accused of attacking a civil guard.
The five Americans have boon held in the Paltan gaol for a month and, according to their vorsion of the affair, Mre. Lockwood was ac- cused of violating some minor or- dinance and the guard struck hor with П sword. The alterention that resulted in the five arrests followed.
Spanish authorities deny that Mrs. Lockwood was struck by the guard and contend that the Ameri cans attacked the, guard without justification.
Mr. Claude Bowers, the US. Ambassador, cabled from Madrid that, the authorities refused to promise a release and that the Americans would have to be tried.
