TENNIS IS NOT PING PONG

(Continued from Page 6.)

ing, forceful play, and years swept everything before her. Now the hard hitting typu is winning every- whore in women's competitions, and several are not far short of the men when ability la measured.

Perhaps the changes in clothing: styles have had a great deal to do with the Improvement in women's tennis. In years gone by the fair sex had to battle on the courts in long, and sometimes tight, dresses, and with an abundance of hair, which made them feel the heat and strain of the gamo. Nowadays the players dress for convenience and comfort, and thus obtain the maximum of freedom on the courts. Many of them have discarded stockinge, and 6 few have followed the men by wearing cream trousers.

When the advent of lawn tennis is fixed at 1874, it must be re- membered the birth of the game goce back to the hall games of Egypt and Porsin, Even the origin of the terms "love" for nothing and "deuce" for 40--all are lost in antiquity,

The original game of tennis was quito different from tawn tennis. It was played on a walled and roof- ed court, and is still occasionally played. It reached its peak of popularity in France in the four- teenth century, and was popular in England in the sixteenth and seven- teenth centuries. This game was first played with the band as the propelling force, and it was not until the alxteenth century that racquets were invented. It is re- corded that there were more than 1,800 tennis courts in France in 1600.

During the war the game died out, but a partially successful at- tempt to revive it was made after the armistice.
