THE STUDY PARENTHOOD IS FAR MORE THAN A FAD

diatribe rend t against American children by n well known writer.
I do not know how many chil- dren she knows, but I take it she is judging fifty million by the dozen or two belonging to her friends. She arraigns the modern mother for the new liberty move- ment which allows children an unheard of freedom.
The mothers, of course, are nc- cused. They do everything wrong and nothing right. Children are, according to this article, merely Incidental, are either turned over to nurses or neglected, and given. their heads.
Aside from the fact that we do have this claas of mothers, by far too many of them ar daily grow- ing In numbers, I take exception to the label she prints. If she knew as many hard working, cara- est, sensible mothers as 1 do, she would be less hasty in her judg ment.

But I stand by the mothers. If anyone carea lo look, or to read the papers, or to step into the au- ditorium of the local schoolhouse' once in a while, she cannot fall to discover the great mother movement in the United States, yea, and father movemen' too It is a fact that daily thousands of groups gather to be instructed in this great science of child rea ing,
It is no common fad, no fanati- cal gesture, or a desire to be con sidered modern. It is a sober de- termination to get at real facts and to adapt sensible theory ar nearly as possible to daily prac- tice in their homes. .
Mothers do know more abou children than they did 20 years ago. Make no mistake, please, about this new movement. Why is it that we can study almost any. thing else on earth and be praised for it, but the moment we open a child book, or hear a child lecture there is that silly propaganda and prejudice to laugh us down?
There will be, are, many mis- takes. Frequently, as in this lib-| erty idea, it is overdone because not clearly understood by some mothers. Discipline plays an es sential part, but it is a new disci- pline that is far more effectual and not so ruinous.
At any rate I see too many fine mothere to allow my factual know- ledge to be swayed by a few snap
