Whilst I was under arrest at Cavité

aforesaid I was denied and refused permission: to communicate with Her Britannic Majesty's Consul at Manila or the German Consul of that place pManila being the nearest Consular port from Cavite) and during the time I was so under arrest a Naval Court

of Enquiry.

was held by the Spanish Authorities at Cavite and at which enquiry I was not admitted or allowed to be present.

Neither the British or German Consul were present at such enquiry.

For the reasons before mentioned and being in fear and danger of losing my life. I was forced to make good my escape and accordingly. on or about the tenth day of October one thousand eight hundred and Seventy three I did make good my escape and proceeded to Manila a distance of ten Iniles and sought for and obtained the protection of the British Consul there and unter whose protection I remained. residing in the Consulate until I left

Manila for Hongkong as hereinafter mentioned. Shortly after my arrival at the British Consulate Manila the Captain General of the Philippine Islands threatened the Consul with forcibly taking me out of the Consulate and taking my life-

Being desirous of leaving Manila for the reasons aforesaid and proceeding. Hongkong

on various occasions I applied in the usual way through the British Consulate for a passport to leave the Country and was refused such passport.

Not having any means of support whilst in Manila everything I possessed having been taken from me by the Spanish. Authorities on my first being made a prisoner Japplied to the Spanish Authorities for means of support but was refused any assistance or means of support although all my properties had been seired as herein before / mentioned.
