POST OFFICE ROBOT

REVOLUTIONISING A DEPARTMENT

WONDER MACHINE

London, Everybody knows about inst year's grent conversion scheme by which the five per cent. War Loan became a 3% per cent stock.

But what the public has not known is that because of that scheme the Post Office carried out a conversion, scheme of its own. It revolutionised a department and anved money for the Treasury.

What the Post Office did was to niechanise the cnce in Hammer amith which deal with the stock and the issue of dividend rnuts..

Destination

There are 1,600,000 war stock holders and every year over three million warrants are issued. A small army of clerks were employ- ed before December to enter the registers and keep the accounts. At the beginning of that month the opportunity was taken out the writing of dividends and the entry by hand of particulars | Egypt (Cairo) of the hold.

to

Slam (Bangkok) Burma (Rangoon) "Cut India (Calcutta)

Iraq (Baghdad)

It is all done by machinery now.

THE MACHINE. A wonder machine-British made and

constructed to the

special requirements of the de-

partment was installed and It only needs to be tended by one clork.

This is what happens:--

A young woman sits at a pun- ching machine. In the machino Is placed a card with hundreds of letters and figures which make no sense at all to the inexpert. A few taps of the machine with the left hand and out comes the card cleanly perforated in about twenty places.

It still means nothing to the Inexpert. But then it is placed in the wonder machine and then on an unending roll, and the name of the holder of the stock, the amount of the holding, the dividend duo and the other particulars of the accounts are clearly and neatly tabulated. At any moment can stop the machine and tell it to add up. Errors are impossible.
