DRAMATIC RACE TO SAVE LIFE
BOY BITTEN BY ADDER
A MOTOR DASH
East London, S. Africa.
A dramatic race by two, motor cars to save the life of a young boy from the fatal effects of n enake bite provided a altuation as dramatic as any film plot, in the East London district.
An eight-year old boy was play- ing in a pumpkin field on bia father's farm 22 miles out of East, London when he trod upon and was bitten by ʼn puff addor. The anako struck the boy's ankle. Fortunately there were soveral of the farm nativo boys clone at hand) and they ran up on hearing the child's cry of fright and pain.] One of them on seeing the punc- ture and realising what it was, applied his mouth to it and sucked out all he could of the venom.
MOTOR CARS DASH.
The boy's mother telephoned to a doctor in East London who in-. structed her to apply a tourniquet above and below the child's ankle, He also told the mother to start in towards East London by cur with the boy. The doctor then Bet out for the farm at full speed.
The two cars met on the road ten miles out of the city, both travelling fast. The doctor leapt out and laying the little boy in his car Injected the serum. Both vehicles then returned to town and: the child. was installed at nursing home where he quickly recovered.
A
Some Idea of the swiftness with which this rescue was conducted can be gained from the fact that the doctor got hia call at his surgery at 11.30 a.m. And the youngster was in the nursing home! at five past twelve.
the
The native who sucked venom away took grave risk. An abrasion on his lip would have had fatal consequences for him. -Reuter.

The only man in Turkey always to wear a glengarry, both in his office and outside, is returning to his home in Glasgow after 21 years in Turkey,
He is Mr. Douglas-Watson, who resigned recently as the director of the Istanbul Telephone Com-, pany. His position was filled by Mr. J. M. Anderson. lie Glaswegian, too.

Friends prepared a warm fare- (well for Mr. Douglas-Watson, who is the best-known Scotsman, In Istanbul. He has not definitely decided where he will reside, but he intends to take a long holiday after what he describes as “21 years, gruelling work."
When Mr. Dougins-Watson first came to Turkey the Sultan tried to make him wear a fez. But the Scotsman preferred his glengarry and has worn It constantly during) hia 21 years here.
The Tolephone Company, nc- cording to Mr. Watson, is the sole remaining British concession in Istanbul,” It was he who couséd an innovation in telephone eer- vices when he required the local exchange operator to answer in either of two languages-Turkish or French.
Mr. Watson kept his post, here all through the Great War and was twice arrested before finally escaping Great Britain.
