wife, Lily Hood.
Mr. A. C. D. Ensor, prosecuting, said that Hood had been employed by Messrs. J. G. Nixon and Sons, chartered accountants. at New
enstic, for 18 years.
Mr. Busor said that Hood, in a statement, said that his wife suffer- ed from epileptic fits, was at times very depressed, and had threaten- ed to commit suicide.
Hood was also alleged to have Jaaid: "On March 16 I could not sleep because of my wife's health. I went to the kitchen and gol a hatchet. She was asleep, and
I
saw the position of her head by the street lamp. I struck her several blows with the intclet.
"It was my intention to commit suicide by gas, but I could not bring myself to do it.
"I loved my wife. We never had a quarrel, and it' was to end her soffering that i did it. It was be cause I did not want her to die by her own hand with a sin on her soul, but I committed this sin for her sake."
Mr. George Nixon, a partner in the firm of chartered accountants. said that Hood was a very excel lent clerit. Hoad had told him that the doctors had said his wife would get worse an eventually go mad. He (Mr. Nixon) knew there was a cloud over Hood's Br.

The winning team was that of the 5th (1.K.S.) Henvy Battery R.A.. seven of whose team finished in the first nine.
