Sensational allegations were made at Eastbourne Police Court when the hearing began of summonscя taken out under the Prevention of Corruption Acts against an East- Lourne ex-alderman, a cable com- pany, and two other Individual de fendante.

The defendants were: Richard Spencer Chatfield, Eastbourne ex-alderman, of The Creasent, Eastbourne;

David W. A. Roberta, of Watford By-Pass-road, Edgware Middlesex, formerly deputy electrical engineer -to the Eastbourne Borough Council; Charles McCartney Rend, of Bilternerons, Bitterne Park, South- ampton; and Pirelli General Cable Euston road, Works, Limited, of

London.

In 1923 the Eastbourne Council decided to extend its undertaking. and between March 1929 and July 1932 there were no fewer than 17 contracts. Towards the end of 1920' the Pirelli Company set up an office in Mr. Eastbourne. Early in 1930 Bradshaw, wha was at that_office, received instructions to hand over a motor-car to Alderman Chat- field, and did so. Petrol and oil were supplied for the car and petrol was also supplied to Roberts for the car which he owned.

Mr. Cassels sald he would witnesses who would say that be- tween October 1980 and May 1932, £153 2s. 4d, was spent by the com- pany upon entertainment generally, and £436 128. 6d. was spent in cash payments and in the cost of going to theatres and to dances.

On one occasion, said Mr. Cassels, £5 16s. Od. was given to Roberts to hand over to Chatfield for the cost of a dress for Mrs. Chatfield.

Detective-Inspector Sawkins said when he served the summonses Roberts said, "I have done nothing corrupt." Chatfleld said, "I have done my level beat not only for the nlao electricity undertaking, but for the whole town: I have done nothing wrong and I welcome this Inquiry."
