THE
WORLD OF WOMEN
YOUR CHILDREN.
It's Cruel to Laugh at Adolescence.
By Olive Roberts Barton
There are two stages of man, during which he suffers mental agony if the world laughs at him. One is in babyhood when he is getting oriented in this fretful place called the world. A baby, as we now know, auffera tortures of embarrassment if he is laughed
ut.
The other is when he breaks out of the chrysalis of childhood into the new world of adolescence, Did you ever watch a butterfly just out of cacoon? Its wings are folded tight to its sides. It appears to be stupid, dazed. In a half comn it drags about. The wings dry and gradually unfold. After a bit the newborn, Butters nd eventually off it goes.
It has to adjust itself to a new freedom and new life. It is a dif ferent world now, or rather it has n different view, not a worm's-eye view from the ground, but a clear- er and astounding vision from above.
Sensitive In Adolescence
And no it is with children in this second "baby-hood"-let us enll it-of adolescence. They are not the same simple people with the limited vision of child- hood that they were a year or two ago. Their very psychology it changed and new adjusment to other people and affairs is de. manded. But it is confusing at firat.
It is now that they become pe- culiarly sensitive. No age of man in as sensitive as this period of evolution. Little things take on ainister proportions; they parti- cularly fear ridicule. And to hide this fear, this shrinking and un- certainty, they made a choice. They try to act grown-up. It is the beat defense. And they be- come taciture, even surly, or defi- ant perhaps. Almost anything will they resort to rather than let it be known that their spirits are cringing, trembling, tuned to the allghtest hint of cruelty in the form of laughter.
Here's An Example
One day дете years ago an overgrown young chap of fourteen or fifteen, with two older broth ers, came to his mother. He said, "I'm going to take Mary out in the ranoe and to-night we're going to a movie Do you suppose I'm in love with her?"
