detachment on Saturday crossed the Wall for the pur- pose of relieving the pressure caused by Chinese attacks. The detachment is said to have occupied Sahochiao, fourteen kilometres to the south-west of Haifengkou. HEAVY CASUALTIES

These developments follow Japanese reports of a week ago that there were indications that the Japanese might be compelled to cross the Great Wall for the pur- pose of driving back the Chinese from Hsinfengkou and breaking up the troop concentrations in this region.
