A gaunt, lonely building in the Charing Cross-road, W.C., has the notice on its doors: "This church la officially closed." It is the church of St. Mary the Virgin.
The notice will remain until the housebreakers arrive. And then the last net in a long tragedy of struggle and endeavour will be over.
The church has been declared re- dudant. As such it was marked out for destruction some time ago by the Ecclesiastical Commienio

Fight For Existence
The Vicar and the congregation fought the demolition scheme to the last. When first the church was declared to be redundant a series of objectiona carned it a year's re- prieve. Final condemnation was fought with, a series of potitions, processions, and agitation. The onlistinent of public sympathy at one time almost saved the church.
If St. Mary's had not the savour of antiquity, it is pleasant in ita drei aurroundings. It was built in 1860, replacing another which had been successively a Greck church in the Seventeenth Century and French Protestant church.

The congregation had dwindled to a handful-fewer than half-dozen at times. It is these alone who will lose their regular place of worship. But it will be missed by the hund- reds to whom St. Mary's was a place of occasional meditation and rest. They will not gladly ace erected on the site a cinema, which in one of the fates proposed for the site.
