DULL
According to Messra. Swan, Culbert- Fon nad Fritz, the New York market. was dull yesterday. Business Jone: 600,000 shares. The Wall Street Journal reports. The market was
dull but advanced due to the Repeal of the 18th Amendment being passed by Sennte, good reports in trade een- tres, Michigan situation quiet, firmer commodities and the reassurance that no railroad would be thrown into re- ceivership on March 1st, all of which offset, the unfavourable Federal Re- serve statement showing an increase of $149,000,000 in money circulation, largely due to the Michigan situation and also the lone of 24,000,000 mone- tary gold.

FELT HATS POST OFFICE NOTICE
What they are made of and how to choose them.
BY
LINCOLN, BENNETT.
ITHOUT entering into too
W detailed and technical an
explanation of how Felt Hats are made, it is our endeavour to furnish nsuficiently complete description, both of the method of manufacture and of the materials used, to enable any man to decide what kind of felt hat will best suit his requirements before he buys it.
Felt hats (both Bowlers and Soft Felta), are made either of Wool Felt or Fur Felt.
A Wool Felt is at once detected: by its "lack of lustre" appearance and by its coarse "blankety" feol. Only when it is finished with a veneer of fur can a Wool Felt Hai| hope to escape detection, and even thôn a close inspection will revén. its shoddiness.
Our present concern is with Fur Felt Hats-hats the felt of which is made entirely of fur.
How Felt is Made,
Many people imagine that the fur akin is used, that the felt for thats is made in strips, or that the fur hairs are stuck together "u some adhesive agent such as glue, None of these ideas is correct.
The fur is cut from the skin, is cleansed of all grease, pieces o akin and foreign matter, and alı thick coarse hairs are renove The fur is then in a very finely arparated form.
The required weight-enoug).] for one hat-of this pure fur is then thrown or sprayed out of the funnel mouth of a machine over and around a large tinely per- forated copper cone to which fur is attracted by the suction induced by an electric fan work- ang below the cone.
This perforated cone, which is continuously revolving, $6 wet and the hairs of the tur adbere to it, evenly, covering its entire surface. Water from auper. heated chamber is sprayed finely on to the cone, with the resun that the individual hairs o fur come together, Interlock ana hold on to each other. In other words, the fur has begun to “fell,”” and the covering on the cone has changed its nature. From a covering of loose fur it has be come a coating of thin felt 01 außefent strength to allow of its being stripped off the cone, which it was formed, in one piece.
Felting.
on
Here we have the body of a folt hat in its first stage; but this fell hat body when removed from the cone is many times larger than any bat.
the
By subjection in various way to the combined conditions of heat, molature and pressure with movement,
felt body fr thickened, contracted ana toughened; In other. words the "felling" is continued until the individual hairs have so come together and interlocked, that it separate. is impossible for them Each hair is now more closely locked and interwined with its fellows than are the threads of any woven material, and the felt vody, shrunk to the required size, thickness and strength, is ready
The Money Order Department will close at 1 pm, on Monday 20th,- Tuesday 21st, and Wodnesday 22nd February, 1993.

The Quality of the Fur
[
The foregoing is broadly the method by which all Fur Felt Hats are made, and it will conscquently be readily understood that the quality of a felt hat, by which we mean the standard of appearance and durability, will depend almost! entfroly upon the kind of fur used.
Generally speaking, the longer the individual hairs of the fur the stronger and tougher will be thei felt, and the finer the hairs, the closer its texture.
If the hairs are short and coaraci they will be unable to hold to- gether with the game tenacity as longer haira; the felt will stretchi [and the hat quickly go out of shape, possibly also tear or break. If, on the other hand, the hulps are both long and fine, the close tough felt they make will produce a hat that will not stretch and will therefore retain ita shape,
