VEHICULAR FERRY

ON TRIALS.

MAN KUNG GIVES ENTIRE SATISFACTION

Entire satisfaction was expressed by the owners and builders yester- day on the completion of the off- cial trial run of the a.. Man Kung, first of the new vehicular ferrien bullt by tho Hongkong and to the Whampon Dock Company order of the Hongkong and Yau- mati Ferry Company for their new combined passenger and riotor venicular service between Hong- kong and Kowloon.

have

There is something strangely weird in the appearance of tho craft, which may be due to a con- trast of type by comparision with the ordinary ferry bont we been accustomed to in these watera, The Man Kung is almost one-third as broad as it la long; which means that in spite of the superstructure, the craft has a noticeably squat ap- pearance. Its performance, how- ever, la not to be gauged by out- ward semblances, for in the rigid tests through which it was put yes- terday it exceeded the contracted speed of 10 knots, and revealed a remarkable degree if mobility which augura well for the ticular nervice for which it is in- tended.

par-

The trials were conducted over a measured course of a mile in Kow- loon Bay, the Man Kung being On given six runs at full speed. each occasion it exceeded the con- tracted speed, the best being per- formed at 10.2 knots.

and driving twin propellors at either end as desired. worked smunthly and gave no trouble. There was a remarkable absence of vibration even at top speed, and the vessel was entirely steady under

. A varlation to the tests, when the Vessel was operated at graded speeds and also subjected to other conditions, demonstrated astonich- ing mobility and powers of turning. The Man Kung, it was amply de- monstrated, could turn completely in its own length,

A contrihating to this satis- factory condition of affairs, those concerned are to be complimented

on their choice of the electric hydraulic steering gears each of which is controlled by telemotor from

wheelhouses. separate

The forry, so to speak, leaps to the guiding touch of the helmaman, the steering gear bo cause of the special features attach- od, being responsive to the degree of sensitiveness,
