BERVICES CONTRACTUELS DHS MESSAGERIES MARITIMES.

The Motor-ship,

**FELIX ROUSSEL" Arrived Hongkong on Tuesday, the 31st January, 1933. From MARAHILLES &C. Consignees of Carge by the above named steamos are hereby informed that their goods with the excoption of Oplum, Tressure and Valuables are being landed and placed at their risk in the Godswns af the Hongkong Kowloon Wharf and Godown Co. Ltd., Kowloon, whence delivery can bo obtained as the goods are landed.-

Goods not cleared within 7 days will be including date of arrival, subject to rent.

All claims must be sent to the undersigned before the Friday, the 10th February, 1983, or they will not bo recognized.

The Bidding. South, the dealer, opened the contracting with one spade, West passed and North bid two pades. East passed and South bid three hearts. This showing of a second suit is a highly constructive bid and i practically foreing. North showed that he could support February, 1933. either major, and that he was per- by hapa equally strong in both, bidding four hearts which South passed.

The Play.

West has the opening lead-the the natural auit to open, diamonds. Here is a point to which 1 wish to call your atten- tion-the opening lead of a ten spot by the better players to-day is not made from the top of a sequence such as 10-9-8. but is made to show a higher honour (for example Q-10-9) as the lead- er in this case holds. You will see that this information proves! very valuable in a later play.

West's ten spot was covered by dummy's Jack East played the king, and South won the trick with the ace. He then led the jack of hearts, West covered, and dummy A won the trick with the ace. small spade was returned from dummy which East won with the aco. This play of the ace by East clearly marks him with a single ton--as South had bid spades there was no hurry for Eust to play other than second hand low,

As his partner had opened the teu of diamonds, East now knew! that he held the queen so he led a stall diamond which West won' with the queen, and then led a Spade which East Fulled. In this n: inter the declarer's contract of four odd was defeated.

You will now hear the declarer omplain that this was certainly Where hard luck-but was it?

did the declarer make his mis- take? He made the mistake right the hand. at the beginning of

He could ree that with even dis- tribution he would have no trouble All that lu making his contract.

WAR he would have to do guess the heart finesse. But sup- posing he ands four hearts in one the hand and four spades in other? IIe knows by West's play' of the len spot that West has an

of entry card with diamonds so in order to make sure! of his contruct he must either re-i fuse to win the first diamond trick with the ace or, if he does win the first dinmond trick, ho mast immediately return a dia- mond, killing West's possibility of getting in to give his partner) a ruff..

this is You might say that pret advanced playing for the
