50,000 HEROIN PILLS SEIZED
POLICE CONSTABLE
ARRESTED
A huge nelzura of heroin pilin. followed by the arrest of a Shan- tung constable, was made on board the 6.5. Anhui on her arrival from Shanghai on January 6 last. The Chief Officer of the ship, on its arrival in port, noticed a coo- fo carrying a sack, being ascom- panied by the constable, who was stationed on board the ship as onc of the anti-piracy guards. On the men being stopped and the sack opencu, five mall parcela, wa found. One of the packages was onned and discovered to conta.n pilla, but, except that they were bart, the No. 2 compradore of the ship, was unable to inform the officer what they were.
The sack was kept by the officer and Inter the compradoro stated that the pills were the same as oplum. The following day they were handed to the captain, who had not been on board the pro- vious day. The master reported the matter to the agents who then notified the police.
The ship left for Canton and Jon its return the guard was de- tained and charged. This morning (he was brought before Mr. Scho
neld at the Central Police Court and charged with being in posses jelon of 50,000 heroin pills.
Mr. F. E. C. Rendell appeared for the defendant and Mr. W. in Bart Sparrow for the prosecution
After outlining the facts of the case, Mr. Sparrow said that in the defendant's favour was the fact that the day after the pills wer" seized by the officer, the constable reported for duty and drow his pay as usual,
The No. 2 compradore would give evidence that during a con- versation he had with the defend- Jant subsequent to the seizure the constable naked the compradore to get the pills back from the off eer and to offer him some money If necessary.
The case was adjourned until to-morrow morning.
