Sir Walter Morley Fletcher, Secretary of the Medical Research Council, speaking at the National Conference on Biology, over which Viscount Chelmsford presided, at B.M.A. House said that there could be no true education without "in- struction in the phenomena of life and the laws which governed it.
"The child to-day," he said, "is taught in all the churches to worship & Father who is a Creator, yat they are also taught that the culmination of the Father's crea- tive power the shrine of the human body and the human mind--are not to be discussed.
"If biology can be brought into a right relation with worship, we may find the key to the problem
of teaching sex questions to young minds. There can be no true wor ahip which scorns or balittles the chief work of the Creator."
Speaking of the utilitarian aspects of biology and referring to the urgent need for research on inacets, Sir Walter said:
"Insects are by far the most Bumerous of the enemies of the human race. Insects destroy one-tenth of the agricultural pro- duce of our Empire yet there is hardly any country which makes 30 small a contribution by research and training as we do towards sol- ving this vital problem of biology."
Sir Amherst Selby Bigge, who presided at the afternoon session, spoke of "a most important person in a Government office who solema- ly asked me, "What are genetica?"
"If a man asks "What are Kents? "he said, "that is merely a tragedy of personal ignorance, but a man who in that position asks 'What are genetics?' in a public danger."
