SHANGHAI, JAN.5. "RELIABLE OBSERVERS REPORT THAT THE CHINESE FRONT LINE, FOLLOWING THE RE- TREAT FROM SHANHAIKWAN, NOW STRETCHES FROM THE EAST TO THE NORTH OF CHINWANGTAO.
The position is being rendered a trifle uncomfortable by the activities of Japanese bombing planes, but no at- tack has been launched on land. The Chinese troops. have no intention of attempting to recapture the lost ground, but they are determined to resist any further Japanese advance, which has at present reached the vicinity of the Tashih River.
Japanese losses in the battle which resulted in the capture of Shanhaikwan are officially stated to have been four officers killed and ninety other casualties. It is understood that General Nakamura, commanding the haikwan operations-Reuter.
