CONTRACT BRIDGE

By W. E. McKenney

One of the most pessimistic sign-off bids in the one over one system is a minimum re-bid of the

samo sult.

When a player is forced by his partner, and continually responds In the suit he first bid, he shows positively that a first bld was | minimum and that he can neither support partner nor play no trump. If partner proceeds with the blu ding, he must take the entire sponsibility for the rosult.

Eust now bid four clubs, a high- ly constructive bid, still urging West to proceed toward a alam If possible. West again denied any desire to continue, and bid four spades, a very strong sign off.

However, East now could count his partner for five or six spades headed, by the ace-king,, plus a king on the side, and short hearts and clubs, so he bid six spades in spite of West's warnings.

INDEPENDENT MEMBERS'

SUGGESTION

now

Dublin, Dec, 28, Senator Vincent, Independent, in a letter to the principal news- papers declaring his hostility agalnat Mr. de Valora, adds that the time has come when a party should be formed embracing all the non-Republican elements. Mr. Vincent points out that Mr. Cosgravo's supporters have 48- tounding achievements to their credit but are no longer capable of living in entity, while the Farmers Party has life and virility and la likely to win 20 to 30 acata at the next election.

A really national party ought to be formed, dissipating the old class and religious difTerences and generating a spirit of optimism and endeavour, he says, and thero- fore suggests that Mr. Cosgrave and Mr. MacDermott, the Farmers* leador, conlence to give a real lead to the country.-Reuter,

"The Unholy Garden" An unshaven and dishevelled Ro- nald Colman, without his striped trou- sers, his Oxonian speech or his Chestfieldian manners, is the not in- considerable promise in "The Unholy Garden", the new Samuel Goldwyn picture which comes to the King's Theatre on Sunday next. In this adventure melodrama. by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, Colman is seen Do Barry Hunt, a gentlomuni adventurer, rogue who has seen

honester daya and

ways. With a motley crow of murderers, thieves and other outcasts, he is hid- ing from the police in a Sahara out- post camp. One of the number, a wizened old Frenchman, is believed to have hidden his plunder somewhere upon the premises, and to worm this information from him is the in- dividual and collective effort of the group. Spying and intrigue and fly- ing desert rides and murders aro essential ingredients of the yarn. Another flower has bloomed in Ronald Colman's garden' of leading women. This time it is Fay Wray.
