REPLY TO OXFORD.
CLUB.
The Irish Club, an undergra- duate club at Oxford, wrote to Mr. George Bernard Shaw asking him to addresh the club this term. This is the reply they recalved on a postcard:
"Mr. Bernard Shaw, who is not and never has been, a professional lecturer, is now obliged to restrict his appearances na ሲ
publie apenker to special and exceptional occasions, mostly of a political kind. He therefore, bera secre Larius of societies to strike his name from their lists of available speakers.
"Mr. Shaw does not open ex- speak at public dinners, give his hibitions or bazaars, take the chair, name ns vice-president and patron, make appeals for money on behalf of hospitals or 'good causes' (how- ever deserving), nor do any cere- monial public work; and he bogs his correspondents to excuse him accordingly."
Underneath Mr. Shaw has writ ten in his
handwriting: own "What is the use of going to Ox- ford if you surround yourself with Trishmen there? You might no well he at Ringaend." (Ringsend is a district of Dublin. Mr. Shaw's birthplace). The card in signed G. B. S.
G. B. S. to Visit U.. S. A. Mr. Bernard Shaw is going to the United States of America-but | for only a few minutes.
Ife said: "Probably the United Stutes will be greatly excited, but there is nothing for them to get excited about.
"I am going on a cruise, and Part of the time we shall be in the neighbourhood of the United Stater. When we are, I may land but only for five or six minutes. "But there is no need for Ame rica's millions to come racing to this favoured spots,"

CRITICISM OF ROAD-
RAIL REPORT
Htrong disapproval of
ma13 featuren of the Sulter "Rond-Raff" Raport is expressed on behalf of the London Chamber of Commerce in a memorandum drawn up by the Transportation Committee and sulopted by the Executive for pre- Kontation to the Minister of Transport.
Cortain points are condemned in vigorous terms; but in general the disapproval in centred on the increase of burenueracy which is contained in "the terms of the Rei port.
The opinion of the Committeo- la obviously that fower restric- tions on the railways rather than more restrictions, on the ronds contains the promise of the speedier solution of a great pro-~ blem.
On the other hand, the Chamber le fully alive to the size of the IN problem,' and states that it anxious to assist the Minister In any negotiations that may be in- stituted.
Among criticisms of individua! points is a condemnation of the high rate of tax at prosent levied on motor spirit. This is stated to be too high for the general in- 'terests, and the Committed adds: "When considering tax on motor spirit special attention should be drawn to the fact that so many in industry pay this tax whose use of petrol is not confined to transport on the road."
Existing Powers Sufficient. On or two items in the Report wilch threaten an increase of "oficialdóm" art denounced. Among these is the proposed in- stitution of a system of licensing which would entail the appoint- ment of officials to ensure that vehicles are in a state of Diness; the Committee considers that the powers already possessed by the Police under the Road Traffic Act are Aufficient for the purpose nimed nt.
There is a strong recommenda- tion by the Chumber that the Minister should review the work- ing of the Railways Act of 1921. It is stated that "it is well known the that the standard rates on rallways are, being superseded by the exceptional rates,' of which there are to-day many millions. As a result traders And it very dimcult to determine their pro- bable costs of transport."
