PETITION

BEFORE COUNCIL THIS MORNING

FINAL DECISION DELAYED

Although it is understood that the petition on behalf of Cheng Kwok- yau was considered by the Gover- Bor-in-Council at a mecting of the Executive Council this morning, no Anality has been resched.

has

The petition, it is stated, been circulated amongst the mem- bers of the Executive Council, and 'will again be before next week's meeting,

Ordinarily, the respite granted to Chong pending a decision regard- ing the appeal to the Privy Council, would have expired last week, but a further extension was granted.

Even if the Governor-in-Council. at next week's meeting, decides not to interfero with the sentence,

Cheng would not pay the extreme penalty for some days, us it in considered hardly likely that the extension of the respite would not be allowed to run its rourse.

Many local concerns welcome some form of protection for similar reasons to those put forward for the Green Island Cement Company,

I personally have been engaged in the food business in the Colony for many years and. have had to compete against large quantities of foodatuffs brought here from sources outside the Colony and the British Empire.

It is suggested that our Govern- ment should make contractors use a portion of Green Island Cement in their work. I personally would be very grateful to our Govern- ment if they would make people cat a certain portion of orally produced or Empire products dally.
