PLUCKY MISS
HANCOCK
FROM SICK-BED TO TENNIS COURT
TO LOSE BY ODD SET
(By "Veritas")
RISING from a sick bed
where she had been confined for a week, Miss R. Hancock yesterday put up a plucky display against Mrs. C. P. F. James in the semi- final of the Ladies Singles Tennis Championship, before being defeated 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Mrs. James thoroughly merit- ed her success which places her. for the second time in the final of the championship, but the courage in which her doughty opponent faced a stiff task called for nothing but admiration. -
Mrs. James brought her vusi and experience of tournament Interport tennis to bear on the game, and it was this which pulled her through the critical the encounter and atages of earned for her the right of meet- ing Miss Enid Lo to-day.
Miss Hancock contended herself in the first set with finding her feet, and although she carried the decision to the vantage game, there was little doubting that Mra. James would take the lend.
Міна set second the In
the attack to Hancock went and played splendid tennis to capture a lend which she increased yet further winning the set ni 6-2. ON HER METTLE.

It in doubtful whether Miss will venture too much up to the net, for her opponent is dandiy in lobbing. I anticipate Miss Le will win, but I rather think the match wil go to three sets, that is, if Mra. James, finds her driving touch early on.
This is Miss Lo's opportunity of winning the ladies championship for three years in succession. Her first succos wan in 1930, when she defeated Mrs. Keary in the final 6-0, 6-3,
