It is quite true that few grand sians are successfully bid, and, of course, net all of them pre made. This particular bonus will not adapt itself to duplicate play, as the sacrifice bidder will be willing to go down neven or eight tricks to stop a grand slam by the oppo- nenta.
The objection that the rubber or money bridge player has to offer is that you can sit down for on en- tire evening, play very fine cards, actually outplaying your oppo- nents by winning four out of five rubbers from them. Finally, on the last rubber, the opponents, who are vulnerable, are dealt ni of the high cards and they bid for a grand slam.
Generally there is little or no play to the making of a grand Elom-they spread their hand, re- ceiving such a large award that it completely wipes out all of tho points that you may have gained by good play throughout an entire: evening.
However, there is this much fo be said in favour of the change- the odds in favour of the decturer risking a sure small lam for a doubtful grand slam are about
even.
For example, suppose that you were positive that you could make a small alam Vulnerable. With your trick score, game bonus and the small alam bonus this would be worth pproximately 1500 points. In the past, in order to bid for a grand slum, it was neces- sary to risk this sure 1500 points To try to win an additional doubt. ful 750 points, but now as the grand slam bonus has been in- creused 750 points, you risk 1600 points to try to win 1500 more points.
The experienced tournament player has felt that the nove ould have been towards reduc- ing all slam bonuses rather than increasing them.
Rubber premiums remain as fol. lows:
Three-game rubber, 600 points. Two-game rubber, 700 points. However, where a rubber ends by arrangement before either side

G.O.C. THANKS ON BEHALF OF MILITARY CHILDREN
The following letter has been' re- celved by Mrs. W. T. Southorn, the Colony Commissioner. Girl Guides, from Hin Excellency Major General J. W. Sandilands, C.B., C.M.G.. D.S.O. General Officer Commanding the British Troops in China:
Dear Mra. Southorn.-I consider that it would be an ungracious act, were I to leave Hongkong, without expressing my grateful thanks to all those connected with the Hong- kong Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, for what they have done in the Interests of the Military children during the past four years.
It is possibly not realized by the general public that I am respon- sible for the education and well being of nearly 800 military chil dren of school age. In the China Command, of whom over 200 are at present living in Hongkong.
You will readily understand that it is no easy matter to provide healthy amusement and occupation for such a large family.
I trust that the children them- aclves share my appreciation for what is done for them. by those who devote their time and energies in the cause for which the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides exist.
Yours very sincerely,
(ad.) J. W. Sandilands,
LATE MR. K. SAYCE.

SATURATION POINT
TO reach Saturation Point is the ambition
Torcery manufacturer and producer. It
signifies that the sales of hla product have absorbed output. In these days not many products attain Saturation Point; production is generally greater than demand.
IT is not so with soft wood. Here Saturation Point is reached and passed; sufficient timber cannot be cut to cope with the world's needs. Moreover, forestry utilization has been brought to such a fine art that there are now over 4,600 proved uses for pine timber alone, such as is grown in selected areas in New Zealand.
IN these fertile, islands the N. Z. Perpetual Foresis Limited has envolved a scheme of afforestation which is puiting pine tree (Le. soft wood) growing on a practical and profitable basis.
TO date investors of moderate means have collectively purchased 144,620 bonds, enabling them to share in the rich returni their longsighted Investment must bring. THEIR capital is steadily, working in New Zealand forests producing the right kind of pine trees to meet the approaching world famine in industrial timber. BONDS enfimated to be worth £250 In approximately twelve years, costing £30 cach-payable by instalments-may now be accured.
WRITE for the prospectus covering the present issue and see how to get in on the "ground floor."
