LUTOMATIC DECARBONISER Particulars from

H. CONNELL & CO., LTD. 4th floor, China Bullding.

AN APPRECIATION,

G.O.C. THANKS ON BEHALF

OF MILITARY CHILDREN

The following letter has been re- ceived by Mrs. W. T. Southorn, the Colony Commissioner. Girl. Guides, from His Excellency Major General J. W. Sandilands, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O. General Officer Commanding the British Troops In China:

Dear Mrs. Southorn.-I consider that it would be an ungracious act, were I to leave Hongkong, without expressing my crateful thantra to all those connected with the Hong- kong Roy Scouts and Girl Guides, for what they have done in the interests of the Military children during the past four years.

It is possibly not realized by the general public that I am respon- sible for the education and well. being of nearly 300 military chil- dren of school age, in the China Command, of whom over 200 are at present living in Hongkong.

You will readily understand that is no easy matter to provide healthy amusement and occupation for such a large family.

The abjection that the rubber or money ridge player. has to offer in that you can sit down for an en-it tire evening, play very dne cards, actually outplaying your uppo- nents by winning four out of five rubbers from them. Finally, on the last rubber, the opponents, who are vulnerable, are dealt all of the high cards and they bid for a grand slam.

Generally there is little or no play to the making of a grand slam-they spread their hand, re- ceiving such a large award that it completely wipes out all of the points that you may have gained by good play throughout an entire evening.

However, there is this much to be suid in favour of the change- The odds in favour of the declarer risking a sure small slam for a doubtful grand slam are about even.

For example, suppose that you were positive that you could make small slam Vulnerable. With your trick score, game bonus and the small slain bonus this would Lie worth approximately

1500 points. In the past, in order to bid for a grand slam, it was neces- sary to risk this sure 1000 points: to try to win nu additional doubt- ful 750 paint, but now

as the grand slam bonus has been iu- creased 750 points, you risk 1500 points to try to win 1000 more points,

move

The experienced tournamient player has felt that the Could have been towards reduc ing all slam bonuses rather than increasing them.

Rubber premiums remain as fol- lows:

Three-game rubber, 500 points. Two-game rubber, 700 points. However, where a rubber ends by arrangenwent before either side

|

I trust that the children them- selves share my appreciation for what is done for them, by thone who devote their time and energies. In the cause for which the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides exist.

Yours very sincerely,

(ad.) J. W. Sandilands.

LATE MR., K. SAYCE.

The funeral of the late Mr. Kelly Sayce, whose demise on Wednesday marked the passing away of a well- known figure in Ice House Street, took place at the Jewish Cemetery, Wonguefchong, last evening.

The last nervice according to Jewish rites was performed by Rabbi Elizer in the Prayer House in the Cemetery, this being follow- ed by the recitation of further prayers at the graveside in which members of the faith participated.

Jephson, Maurice Cario, J. Joseph, F. Schaer, 12. Cooper, H. Dedeoglou, A. P. Creaves, E. Ezra, Elias Joseph, and

thers,

han won two games, the side which has won one game adds 300 points to their score. This is an Increase of 100 points over the old bonus.

SATURATION POINT

10

To reach Saturation Point is the ambition

of every manufacturer and producer. It significa that the sales of his product have absorbed output. In these days not many products attain Saturation Point; production Is generally greater than demand.

IT is not so with soft wood. Hero Saturation Point is reached and passed; sufficient timber cannot be cut to cope with the world's needs. Moreover, forestry utilization has been brought to such a fine art that there are now over 4,600 proved uses for piuo timber alone, such as is grown in selected areas in New Zealand,

IN these fertile islands the N. Z. Perpetual Forests Limited has envolven scheme of afforestation which is putting pine tree (i.e. soft wood) growing on a practical and profitable basis.

TO date Investors of moderate means have collectively purchased 144,626 bonds, enabling them to share in the rich return their longsighted investment must bring. THEIR capital is steadily working in New Zealand forests producing the right kind of pine trees to meet the approaching、 world famine in industrial timber,

BONDS estimated to be worth £250 In approximately twelve years, costing £30 cach-payable by instalments—may now be secured.
