RUMBLINGS OF UNREST AT DARTMOOR PRISON

Mr. Garner, who only just failed in pushing a motion for Prohibition Repeal through the House of Repre sentatives, is shown above greeting Democratic colleagues.

CHECK FOR "WETS"

WHIRLWIND SALLY JUST FAILS

SIX VOTES SHORT OF SUCCESS

Washington, Dec. 5. The whirlwind tactics of the "Wets" immediately Congress reassembled, to accure a motion in favour of the repeal of Pro- hibition, were checked by the House of Representatives voting 272 to 144 in favour of the motion.

The effort was nearly success- ful, the "Wets" only just failing to secure the necessary two-thirds majority. A switch of only six Votes would have carried it all.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT)

(By Telegraph. Copyright, Telegraphic Messages Ordinance, 1893. Rrevived, December 6, 10.44 aan)

LONDON, DEC. 6. DARTMOOR IS IN A FURORE FOLLOWING THE RECENT ESCAPE OF MICHAEL GASKEN AND AMEY AND THE ASSAULT UPON MAJOR PANNALL, THE GOVERNOR, BY AMEY.

As a sequel to the latest indication of reckless in- subordination, discipline in the prison is being further tightened up and a scheme of reorganisation is being carried out as a result of which the staff will be almost completely different from that at the time of the mutiny

It is revealed that unrest among the prisoners has caused considerable trouble in recent weeks, but as a result of the authorities adopting the attitude "Take it or leave it," the convicts' daily complaints regarding the food supplied to them have ceased.

Meanwhile, orders have been issued that the prison regulations are to be strictly enforced, while rifle prae- tice with dummies representing escaping convicts is being regularly carried out.

Mounted officers, as well as armed warders, are guarding working parties.

The Prime Minister, panied by Sir John Simon, was this morning engaged at Geneva in conversations with Mr. Norman Davis, the chief United States delegate to the Disarmament Con- ference, and the French Premier, M. Herriot, who was accompanied by M-Paul Boncour.

It is understood that Mr. Davis fully explained the American pro posal, whereby the results already obtained by the Conference should be embodied in a preliminary con- vention which would also give effect to a resolution recording the Permanent establishment of a WENSATIONCINERA DE TECommission of Control and Super- vision of all armaments, which,
