We find the safe is true in the responding bid. The original bidder makes a suit bid, of one. With a strong hand and normal support, partn& la given two choices--he may jump to three of the original suit, forcing the ori ginal bidder to bid either three ino-trump or four of a suit, or he may elect to become the declarer if the band is to be played at no trump by jumping to two trump.

no

In either the original bidn or responding bide, about the same strength is required, but the bid-

ing is so manipulated that the play of the no, trump is thrown into the proper hand.

In yesterday's article I ex- plained the original forcing suit bida of two. Your attention was called to the fact that this hid is made with the type of hand that can become the dummy, especial- ly at a no trurap contract. There

is still another original foreing

suit bid in the one over one sys- tem, and that is the game demand auit bid of three.

An original suit bid of three is made with a band containing a long, solid trump suit. The hand should not contain over three los- Ing tricks.

It shows a hand that wants to be the declarer and not tite dum- my. It further shows the type of hand that has no desire to play the hand at no trump. It assures game, even though partner's hand is trickless.

As a three bid is made with a hand containing a lonk. solld trump suit and generally a strong side sult, the original hidder is not seeking information. 09 to whether or not partner's hand contains any Trump strength. The most important thing he desires to know is whether not part- ner's hand contains an ace. There- fore, without an ace, regardless of the rest of the strength in the hand, partner must respond with three no trump, thereby denying the holding of an ace.

*

*

When holding an act, partner muat respond with that suit, re- gardless of its length or strength. When holding two nees, one of which, is the ace of trump, bid four in the original bidder's suit. When holding two acès, neither of which is the ace of trump, bid the highest ranking ace.

To illustrate how necessary thin information is, we will take the following hand—Spades A. K, Q J 10 9 x, Hearts K Q J 10 9, Dia- monds x, Clubs none. This would be an ideal three bid.

If partner were now to respond with three no trump, you would know that he held no nec and that the slam could not be made. If he bid four clubs, even though he held an ace, you would still know that the slam was not pro- bable, as the ace of diamonds and the ace of hearts are both out against you.

Pre-emptive bids of four or five of a suit are made primarily to shut out the opponents. They are made with a hand containing a long suit and little or no defen- sive strength. The original bid- der must realize that not only is he shutting out his opponents, but partner as well, and there- fore the bid invites no response from partner.

proves-if any proof were needed-- that the two years of silence have only served to mature and perfect the comedian's art. Constance Cummings heads a supporting cast that is of exceptional excellence. Hor role is an exacting one, and she lives up to its every requirenent. The second male lead is in the competent hands of Kenneth Thomason, and Louiso Closser Flale shares honours with the stellar comedian in the most hilarious of the many bilarous sequences. Lloyd himself has never been in finer form than in his role of a movic-struck boy from a small town who crashes the gates of Hollywood. He has made of the boy a lovable. human character and has placed him in

a comedy that is one continuous laugh from start to finish. Ho should have a medal of honour for bringing out the best cure for gloom that has appeared on the horizon since 1929,
