PREVENTED
TWO YOUNG MEN SENT TO GAOL
Two young Chinese were cach sentenced to six months' hard lab- our by Mr. Wynne-Jones at the Central Police Court this morning when charges of possession of a packet of pepper and an instru- ment ft for an unlawful purpose, and of loitering in Glenealy with Intent to commit felony, ware brought against them by Detective Sergeant D. Fitches.
According to the police officer, special patrofe were being carried out by Chinese detectives on the hill ronds, owing to the recent fro- quent highway robberies, and ou the afternoon of Monday last a do- tective, who was on duty in Glen- caly dressed in coolle clothing, saw the two defendants playing carda by themselves, and searched them, He suddenly noticed a packet on the ground and found that it con- tained pepper.
When questioned, both defen- dants admitted possession of the pepper and took the police to the shop where it had been purchased, They admitted that they had in tended to commit a highway rob bery and were awaiting the arrival of a third man..
The maximum sentence of three months' hard labour was imposed on each charge, both defendants having been in the hands of the police on previous occasions.

Overcast skies did not dull the enthusinam of the army of smiling rone acllera, who invaded the streets of Hongkong this morning on behalf of the charity appeal for i the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
The girls vied with each other in friendly competition for the honour of selling most flowers. Miss C. Noronha easily winning by turning in $222.40. Miss Olga Ribiero's collection box contained $162, while Misa A. Noronha oue- ccaded in collecting $102.95. At 2 p.m. the total amount collected stood at $4,999, with several more boxes to come in. The amount is only slightly less than last year's collection,
The Exchange Resturant pre-i Hented an animated appearance all morning, 48 dainty flower girls atreamed in and out with their trays and collection boxes. The Committee responsible for the Buccess of the appeal worked hard all morning with a host of assint- ants. Prominent workers on, the Committee were Mr. J. E. Noronha, President, Mr. A. Alves, Treasurer, and Mr. J. E. Wilson, Hon. Secretary.

A huge quantity of crockery, stored in a gadown at 7, Chi On Lane, was stolen by burglars dar ing Tuesday or Wednesday night when intruders gained admittance | by forcing the hinges from the door. Altogether 350 ploces were removed, but of these the majority were thrown down the stairs when the thieves found that the entire haut could
not be conveniently removed.
One man, who was found in possession of 25 ріесен, Was brought before Mr. Wynne-Jones at the Central Police Court this morning and charged by Detective Sergeant D. Fitches with burglary. On admitting the offence he was sentenced to four months' hard labour.
It was stated that the greater part of the crockery was smashed.

Monera. Tanng Kam Kes, of 109, Second Street, West Point, and Kwok Taun-koe, of 102, Fa Yuon Street Mongkok, were ordered to pay $1,000 each for material diver- gences from plang by omitting steel reinforcement.
In three other cases, $500 fines wero inflicted for use of defective material, the offenders, being Tso Wing-choong, 29, Po Kong Road, Kowloon City: Wn Cheong, 19, Wan Koi, Kowloon City; and Ching Sang-ke, 18, Po Kong Road, Kowloon City.
