CHENG KWOK-YAU APPEAL

SIR WM. JOWITT TO CONDUCT CASE

PRIVY COUNCIL APPLICATION

The latest development in the Cheng Kwok-yau care is that Sir William Jowilt, K.C., former At- torney General in the Labour Government, has been retained for the purpose of presenting Cheng's application to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council for leave to appeal against his conviction and sentence of death.

Sir William Jowitt is one of the most brilliant advocates of the day, and it is interesting to note that he recently made a sucessful ap plication to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council for leave to appeal against the sentence of six months' imprisonment passed on Commander J.G. Sutton, R.N., on a charge of manslaughter follow- ing the death of a hotel-keeper in Cyprus.

He further expressed the opinion that the silver vein discovered would prove the richest and largest in mining history.
