During the game he usually has a glass of a soft drink at his el- bow and after. one glimpse at North's rock-crushers he became so perturbed that he upset the glass' over cards, players and kibitzera alike.

Tournament ethics prevented him from expressing his opinion of his partner's bid, but if thought could have produced any effcct, Hymen would have shrivelled to a crisp.

The dinner tables were laid out in the roof garden, and at the conclu- sion of the dinner the big crowd sd- journed to the dancing floor of the

Rose Room, where the music was supplied by Dick Leutorio's band and the hotel waltz orchestra.

A group of talented artistes pro- vided the entertainment. and gen- erously responded to the big crowd's the artistes was Mrs. R. Ferrajolo, demand for encores. Among

wife of the Italian Consul-Gedéral, who displayed a tuneful sóprano in a couple of dainty vocal numbers, Madaine H. Mein proved herself a vory finished ballet dancer in a delightful number.

The popular pair Hugo and Jose- phine, who have been appearing at the Peninsula Hotel recently, also added to the entertainment with several ball-room exhibitions..

After midnight, the clever Joy Fun Toy troupe of Chinese acrobats and Jugglers brought along their paraphernalia and gave a couple of the entertaining turns that have made them so popular with Hong. kong, The big crowd continued the festivity until 2 a.m.

Mrs. W. T. Southorn, wife of H.E. the Officer Administering the Government, and Patroness of the carnival, had intended to be present, but was unavoidably provented from attending..

Among thoso present were Sir William Hornell and Capt. and Mrs. F. W. Webb.

The Committee of the New Ter- ritories Medical Benevolent Society is highly satisfied with the success of the function, and wishes to ex- tend its thanks and appreciation to the artistes who supplied the enter- tainment, including the Joy Fun Toy Troupe, to the Management of the Hotel, and all those who con- tributed to the success of the occa- sion.
