VERDICT OF SUICIDE

A verdict of "Suicide whilst temporarily incano" was returned at the Kowloon Magistracy yen- terday afternoon when Mr. But- ters, nitting as Coroner, conduct- ed an inquiry into the circum- stances surrounding the death of Warder Maurico Friend, who was found with a bullet wound in his head on the morning of October 24.
The jury empanelled consisted Christian Lauritsen of Messra. (foreman), Jose Bunaq Autioquin and John Gardner.
The first witness called was Dr. R. H. Uttley, of the Kowloon Mor- tuary, who testified that at 9.30 am. on October 24 he examined. the body of Warder Maurice Friend and found his face cover- od with blood. There were two wounds in the head, obviously bul-

Witness had attended deceased sometime ago and had no reason to believe that he was not nor mal.
Warder Pile, stationed at Lai- chikak Prison, said he had been there for about two months. Al 2 a.m. on October 24 he woke up and noticed that deceased, who was sleeping a few feet away from him, was, muttering to himself. Witness, could not hear what he was saying.

He was sitting on the floor with his back against the wall and his revolver, which was clutched in his right hand, was lying on his stomach.
Witness did not know deceased very well, but from what he could ace, he was a very quiet sort of a mati. Outside of seeing him and talking to him in quarters, witness never had anything much to do with him.
