VERDICT OF SUICIDE

A verdict of "Suicide whilst temporarily incano" was returned at the Kowloon Magistracy yen- terday afternoon when Mr. But- ters, nitting as Coroner, conduct- ed an inquiry into the circum- stances surrounding the death of Warder Maurico Friend, who was found with a bullet wound in his head on the morning of October 24.

The jury empanelled consisted Christian Lauritsen of Messra. (foreman), Jose Bunaq Autioquin and John Gardner.

The first witness called was Dr. R. H. Uttley, of the Kowloon Mor- tuary, who testified that at 9.30 am. on October 24 he examined. the body of Warder Maurice Friend and found his face cover- od with blood. There were two wounds in the head, obviously bul-

Warder Pile, stationed at Lai- chikak Prison, said he had been there for about two months. Al 2 a.m. on October 24 he woke up and noticed that deceased, who was sleeping a few feet away from him, was, muttering to himself. Witness, could not hear what he was saying.
