In presenting the case for the prosecution, Mr. J. A. Fraser said A. S. I. Waller was stationed at the Taipo Market Police Station, and on the day in question, was on duty with a Chinese detective named Ling Sam:
It was alleged that about noon, accompanied or followed by the detective, he entered the Po Wa Tong harbalist shop by the back which he entered followed by the door. Near the door was a cubicle detective. In the cubicle
were three men, two old men who were visiting and a third man who was in fok of the shop and whose name Was Ho Klu. This foki was hold- ing a parcel which the accused saw contained opium. Accused asked He kiu if he had any more of the stuff, and Ho Kiu replied in the ncgative, and also stated that tho opium belonged to a friend.
At this point the two old men left the room, and the accused had a conversation with the detective in the passage outside. The detective, Mr. Fraser continued, would say that the accused aaid to him "$100 or $60," By that the detective mp- parently understood that the ac cused was asking for a bribe from He Kiu, and in pursuance of that, whilst the accused stood outside the cubicle the detective said to Ho Kiu inside the room. "The Sergeant will arrest you: He wants 3100 or at least $50,"
Ho Kiu upon being so informed,
called his master from the front
part of the shop, and at this point the accused left the shop.
Money Borrowed. Subsequent to that conversation, Ho Kiu went out to try to borrow the money, from other people, and being then unable to obtain it, re- turned with the detective to the To Wa Tong and asked hin ployer if he could do anything for him. The herbalist then went out and obtained the money from two different sources, namely $30 from one shop and $20 from a man named Wong Fat.
cm-
This money was handed to the detective, wrapped in a paper parcel, but the detective refused to take It himself. He took Ho Kiu to another shop, the Cheung Chan, and at the foot of the back stair- case, called up to the accused who then came down. The accused was seen to receive the money direct from Ho Kiu. Actually there was six tacle of raw non-Government oplum in the parcel.

Mr. Fraser: It is obviously the duty of the accused if there oplum there to arrest the man in possession of it and perhaps also to take the necessary proceedings against him and other people who infringed the Ordinance. On being charged at the Police Station with the present offence, the cused denied the charge. It was a plain denial.
BC-
Detectives Evidence. The detective Ling Song said that through the lattice work of the cubicle partition when he got there. he could see Waller seize the parcel of opium, being afterwards told by Waller that he had arrested Ho Klu for the possession of opium. Waller said, "The
