LOCAL WEDDING.

MR. A. C. FORD MARRIED TO MISS JOYCE HOOK

:

There was a large gathering at the Union Church, Kennedy Road, on Saturday afternoon, when Mr. The American Individual Mas A. C. Ford, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Ford, of Folkestone, Was ters' Tournament vividly brought marriód to Miss Joyce Hook, home the fact that the one-over-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ge one system is destined to become Hook, of Folkestone. In this tournament, practically no other system than the one over one in its entirely was used. It is true that other systems employ the one bid from which this sy tem gets its name, but experienced tournament players realize the many advantages this system has to offer.

The bride, who was given away by Mr. G. Duncan, looked charming in a dress of blue georgotte, with a blue picture hat to

match. She carried a bouquet of white lilles, Her bridesmaid was Miss Beryl Hook, who was dressed in white and pink organdie, with a white picture hat, and carried a bouquet of pink gladioll, Mrs A. pass,

West pass, North one diamond, Enst one heart.

South passed-even though he. held two aces-due to the fact that his partner had made a third hand bid, which might be very weak, West passed.

North then bid two clubs. The howing of a second suit assured South that partner held a real hand. East passed and South then bid two spades which North carried to four.

The Play,

The opening lead in every ease was the four of hearts, which was won by South, the declarer, with the ace. He immediately led the teu of clubs and here is where the interesting point came in.

If East wins the first club trick with the king, there is no possible way of stopping the declarer from making six odd. Some players made the mistake of taking the king of clubs.

Friday's Ceremony

of

Miss Olive Dixon, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luke Dixon, of Southchurch, Sunderland, England, became the bride of Mr. Alexander Hardy Finnie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Finnie of Sunderland, on Fri- day last at the Kowloon Union Church, the Rev. Dr. E. L. Allen officiating.

Entering the Church on the arm of Mr. John Will, who performed the office of bestowal, the bride looked charming in a gown of pale rose satin charmeuse trimmed with diamante, with veil to match, and a diamante headdress with pink orange blossoms. Her bouquet was of pink roses and Honolulu creeper, Miss Joan Anderson attended as bridesmaid and wore a dress of coatls to match and a cap of silver love-in-the-mist blue georgette with

tlasue. She carried a bouquet of pink gladioli.

Mrs. J. Will, who wore a dress of

floral georgette with hat to match,

was the matron of honour, while Mr. Alex. Atkan discharged the duties of bost man.

A reception was later held at the Peninsula Hot The couple are spending their honeymoon at Re- palac

Bay. The bride's going away dress was a two piece suit of wine coloured crepe de chino trimmed with-brocade and hat to match.

Portuguese Couple

The Rosary Church, Kowloon, was the scene of a pretty Por- tuguese wedding on Saturday when Mr. C.A. d'Assumpeno, son of the Inte Mr. C.A. Rocha d'Asaumpeno and of the late Mrs. Donna M. de S. Fernandes, was married to Mias Lyte dos Santos

Oliveira, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. S. Oliveira. The Rov, Father Spada. officiated.

Where East refused to take the king of clubs, it takes skilful play The bride, who was given away on the part of the declarer to make by her father, was charmingly at-

Rix odd. The hand must be play-tired, and was attended by the ed as follows:

The ace of diamonds and then the king of diamonds in dummy and must be cashed. The ace king of trump are led from dummy and the declarer gets a fortunate break when the queen and jack fall from the East hand.

His next play is a gmail dia mond. Fast shows out, dropping a heart, and the declarer trumps and then leads the three of hearts, trumping in dummy with the ten of spades.

A small diamond is then return- ed and trumped by declarer with the eight of spades. He leads the nine of spades, picking up West's soven, discarding the jack of clubs from dummy. East must now drop the ten of hearts,

Declarer then leads the seven of clubs, winning in dummy with the nce. He leads the ten of dia- monds and Enst is forced to dis- card his king of hearts so as to win his only trick with the king

of clubs.
