He was nick-named "Old Grog" because of the cloak of a course material called gro gram which he wore, and the beverage he introduced was named after him.

Finally concerning the issue it may be noted that at the time when Admiral Vernon decid- ed to water it, the rution to each man was a half pint of neat rum. It can be seen, therefore, that from that half pint (to which Admiral Vernon added a quart of water, directing that the mixture should be issued in two lots, mur- ning and afternoon) to the pro- sent half gill, with or without water, the sailor has advanced far on the road to abstinence.
