CONTRACT BRIDGE

By W. E. McKenney

It is rather unusual to see the declarer squeeza himself, but clever defence in the following hand brings about this peculiar situation.

The Bidding.

347

The hand was played at con- tract and South opened the bid- ding with one club-a rather werk opening bid. West over-called diamonda and South wont to two No Trump. North bid three dia- monds and Soath went to three No Trump.

The Play.

West had the opening lead and played the queen of hearts. Do- clarer refused to win the trick, preferring to hold off for at least one more round,

West well reasoned that it might be better to let the declarer run of his diamonds. It might embarrass the declarer for dis- cards, especially as West would be able to discard after the declarer --so the next -play by West was the 10 of diamonds which was won in dummy. with the ace of dia- monds. The king of diamonds! was then led from dummy which caught West's queen.

Four more rounds of diamonds were led from dammy, East fol- lowed with one diamond and then echned In clubs by playing the aight and then the four spot. His next discard was the three of spades. The declarer was forced to discard threo clubs and a spade. Weat discarded two apades, a heart and a club. The declareri then led a small club from dummy which East won with the ace. A small heart was led by East, de- clarer, played the four and West won the trick with the 10.

It was rather easy for West to get a reading on the South hand, 80 before cashing his ace of hearts, he led a small spade, dum- my played the 10 and East the Ave, and South was forced to win the trick with the ace. He then cashed his king of clubs, Wost discarding the king of spades, but South must now lead a heart into West's aco Jack. West thereby won the last two tricks which de- feated the declarer's contract one trick.

It looks as though it might be rather easy double dummy to make three No Trump with the North and South hand, but if Weat refuses to lead a second heart, throwing North in the lead with a diamond Instead, good de fence will prevent the declarer from making his contract.

THE PAWLEY PARLEYS.

NEGOTIATION HELD UP BY VIOLENT THUNDERSTORM Newchwang, Oct. 1.

A violent thunderstorm, with heavy rain and vivid lightning, has again turned the paths into quagmires, thus imposing a fur- ther handicap to the success of the negotiations with the captors of Mrs. Muriel Pawley and Mr. Char- les Corkran.

It is particularly unfortunate that these unfavourable condi tlona prevail ILL the prosent moment, as it was hoped that the more rapid journeys to and from the bandit inir might speed the negotiations.-Router.

CHINA REALTY COMPANY 8% DEBENTURES 8% INTEREST VS 6% INTEREST MEANS ONE THIRD MORE INCOME

of

Simple Arithmetic

."A" offers to the investing public the opportunity to invest funds at 6% interest. "B" offers an investment with every advantage of "A" plus an assured return of 8% interest,

It's just a matter of simple arithmetic!

8 versus 6 means a third more whether it be hairpins or lacs of dollars. But when it is applied to interest derived from an investment it means a third more additional income.

Because we believe that the investing public should get a larger share than usual in the profits which accrue to modern business we pay interest of 8% on our debentures which are issued in denomina- tions of $100.00 each, No sounder investment than these debentures can be found because, they are backed not only by sound and conservative real estate mortgages but by the entire assets of this

prosperous company as well,

The record of this Company-a record of success extending over a period of years-shows that we can pay 8% interest on our debentures, guaranteed by a conservative margin of safety, and make in addition a satisfactory profit for our shareholders.

The money secured from the sale of our debentures is not used for speculative purchases of land but is loaned on good real estate mortgages. We have in the past loaned more than 100 millions of taels in the form of mortgages on Shanghai real estate and every cent of capital and interest has been repaid.

This is No. 40 of a series advertisements issued

to interest Hongkong investors in the liberal investment opportunities offered 'by the China Realty Company, Shanghai.
