SEQUEL TO FATAL REVOLVER DUEL.

DISTRICT WATCHMAN ON SERIOUS CHARGE

The shooting affair in Western Street at midnight on September 10-11, when two District Watchmen engaged in a duel, one injuring the other fatally, had a Court acquel yesterday afternoon, when District Siu Kon-chlu, Watchman No. 99,

was charged with the wilful murder of District Watchman No. 60, Lai Chuot.

The accused was not represented by counsel.

In a detailed statement of the Crown case, Mr. Fraser, Assistant Crown Solicitor, described the course of the duel, which occurred in a sloping street outside the No. 7 Police Station, at an hour when the duties were being changed, and said that it will be the Crown case that the accused shot the deceased first and killed him.

Opening for the Crown, Mr. Fraser sald:

This murder is a result of a quarrel between two district watch- men over a girl-a prostituto at Yat Foo Street, West Point. She man, was well-known to the dead and they were on very lutimato terma,

On the evening of the night on which the dead man Lal Cheun was killed, the accused together with a friend went to this girl, and the accused proposed that she should She be friendly to this friend, refused to entertain the Anggos- tion, and the'accused and his friend then left.

Later that evening, the dead man on his best came round and spoke to the girl in the street, and she told him that the accused had como carlier that evening. The next thing that we know took place, in fact the next thing that actually happened (there was no unfriend- liness between the girl and the ac-! cuecd, there was no excitement, or anger shown by the dead man at the time) was the shooting.

The scene was transferred to the foot of Western Street at mid- September night on the night of 10-11. Thred District Watchmen

waiting at the foot Western Street to go off duty. They changed duties at the No. 7 Police Station. One District Watchman was waiting at the corner Western Street and Queen's Rond West as the midnight duties came out of the Station. These new drties consisted, on that gight, of four District Watchmen, twa whem turned up ir the direction of Queen's Road, and the accused, who was one of the other two, turn- ed round from the Station towards Des Voeux Rond. As he came round, the three District Watch- men waiting round the corner to be relieved, came

up. One walked past the accused and on. Of the other two one was the dead man.

It was dark at the time. The only light came from a shop at the corner, and, owing to the lateness of the hour, most of the lights in the street were out, with the pos- sible exception

lights upstairs in the houses.

The accused was stopped by the Iman who was killed, and they had a conversation together. Actually there is no record of the details of that conversation, but apparently it was a quarrel and presumably it related to the woman,

Quarrel Over Woman.

The dead man was accusing the accused of interfering with his girl, and he asked the latter to go with him to the Station. One witness will say there is no corroboration -that the dead man hit the accua- ed with a truncheon.
