East and West were vulner- able-North and South were not; vulnerable. At every table South started the bidding with one dia- mond, but from then on practi- enlly every table bid the hand dif- ferently. Some players with the West hand overcalled with two uluba, Others doubled-while Home, thinking that South might be putting in a psychic diamond bid, passed. In reply to the dou- ble, Enst would respond with two spades which South would double. West than bid three clubs which North doubled. CAUSEWAY BAY MURDER
· STORY OF STRUGGLE IN THE FLAT.
There were polgnant scents at the Central Magistracy yesterday afternoon during the second day's hearing of the Causeway Bay murder case.
Chan Ah-ping, umah luthe household of the murdered youth, broke down and wopt hysterically as she left the witness box. The dead boy's mother who followed her was so distressed by the sight that sho was unable to give evidence, and was allowed to stand down for half an hour.
The amah Identifled the accused, Li Kanp-ting, as her assailant on the night of the tragedy, but Kung Bhui-hing, another servant who was also attacked, was thable to re- cognise her attacker.
The case was adjourned until this afternoon.
Mr. Schofield, Police Magistrate, heard the case, and the assistant Attorney General, Mr. R. E, Lind- sell, prosecuted. The defendant was not represented by counsel.
In ovidence Chan Ah-ping said that on the night of September 5 she was sleeping in the front cubicle of No. 40 Causeway Bay Rond. On hearing a noise she woke up and went to see what was the matter. She was stooping down when she received several- blows on the herd. She called out "robhera" at the top of her voice,

Witness: Yes. I remember hav. ing seen hinr before.

two spades. South went to three dias monds which was now doubled by West. North, sensing a freak dis- tribution, responded with three hearts, hoping to find his partner with at least a few hearts. Ensti doubled three hearts. You -will notice that nt no time did North or West, each holding six clubs, ever bid the club suit. The heart contract was defeated two tricks giving East and West a plus score of 200 on the board, while all but one other pair, holding the same hands as they, had a minus score of from 1000 to 2000 points.
At one table North and South endeavoured to play the hand at three No Trump while at another table the East and West pair tried to play it at five No Trump --both of course met with disagnot hear any call or cry from Leung By the Police Magistrate: I did

The best bidding, in the writ- er's opinion, would be South une diamond, West doubled, North DASH, Fast one spade. South should now double one spade to ahow his partner a strong hand, West would then bid two clubs which would be promptly doubled by North. East should not make the mistake of now showing the weak five-card hoart suit-re- member that East has been forced to answer partner's double with a spade bid and if West selects to continue the bidding, there is no further responsibility on the part of East. The final contract, therefore, would be two clubs by West, doubled.

Do you know where he worked or what he was? I frequently saw the man in the vicinity but I did not know what he did for a living.

Mother Breaks Down, The next witness called was the mother of the murdered young man. As she entered the courtroomt the amah descended from the witness hox, weeping bitterly. Seeing her, the mother also broke down.
Another woman, who came with her to the Court, asked permission to sit with the distressed lady in the box but Mr. Schofield suggested that the witness could be heard later.
Kung Shui-hing, servant in the house, said she was sleeping with the previous witness on the night of September 6 and had been awakened by the ery of "robbers," She sat up in bed and saw a man in the cubicle. He sprang ut her with a knife in his hand and struck her on the right side of the face with the knife.
Her assailant, she said, was wearing a white singlet and white short trousers. She could not identify the man who attacked her.

A moment later, the amah was heard screaming "robber." where- upon Mr. Leung Wing-suen raised himself from bed and went out into the passage to investigate. Sounds of a scuffle brought witness in her turn out into the passage, and she could just catch a glimpse of the profile of the intruder as he darted past and leaped over a partition into an adjoining storeroom and dis- appeared.

Not Positive Then. "I was not then positive that it was the accused," stated Mrs. Leung, in explaining to the court that previously she had often seen Li Kaap-ting, and had known him as an employee at the leather Bome two or three doors away from her home.
Questioned by the Public Pro- secutor, Mrs. Loung said that at a Police parade she picked out the accused as being that aame man whom she saw In her dat on the night of the murder.
