TERRIFIC EXPLOSION OCCURRED TO-DAY ABOARD THE NEW FRENCH SUBMARINE "PERSEE” KILLING ONE OF HER ENGINEERS AND INJURING THIRTY-TWO MEMBERS OF HER CREW, ROUGHLY HALF HER FULL COMPLE- MENT.

This is France's second serious submarine mishap | of the year, the first being the ill-fated Promethee, which sank off the French coast carrying 63 of her. officers and men to the bottom.

The "Perace" is of exactly the same type of craft as the Promethee. She was laid down under the 1927 programme but has only recently been completed. To-] day's tragic mishap occurred while the submarine was undergoing special trials between the French coast' and the Channel Islands.
