12 Racehorses Shot to Save Money
PARLOUS CONDITION OF TRADE
Stockton, Aug. 24. An instance of the parlous con- ditions of the trade in racehorses, is the case of a well-known breeder, who has just had 12 of his yearlings shot.
Until a few years ago there was a market for the moderate horse who was capable of no better than' running into a place in a selling race. It was always possible to sell him for export to Java or Panama or some of the smaller countries, where they carry on their racing with horses that are not good enough to run in Britain, France
or the United States. Even a bad horse was worth a hundred pounds or eo for export; now that outlet is practically closed.
Even countries such ax India and South Africa, where racing is conducted on good lines and the stakes are good, are buying only a very limited number of horses. The trade with South Africa is practically dead, on account of the import duty of £100 on all race- horses entering the country,
