The Play.
West would open either the eight of spades or a heart-per- haps the ton of hearts would be selected in the majority of cases. The trick would be won by South the declarer with the queen.
Three rounds of trump should be taken by the declarer, leaving the ace of trump in dummy. It looks if the natural way to play the hand now Is to lead the jack of hearts and then play a small heart to dummy's king.
Mrs. Romano's father Was amongst the earliest Portuguese settlers in the Colony, and was 80 confident of the growth and the commercial possibilities of Hong- kong that he became a pioneer investor in landed property, being the first owner of the farm lot of Pokfulum, which has since been enlarged into a large tract of grazing ground now owned by the Dairy Farm Company.
The late Mr. Remedios was also amateur horticulturist, a keen and his taste. for gardening was shared by his son-in-law, the Inte Mr. A. G. Romano, who helped to levelop the farm lot at Pokfulam into an experimental garden for European vegetables and flowers. By all residents Mr. and Mrs. Romano will be remembered as keen supporters of the Hongkong Bower shows, and some of the finest
exhibits at these annual func- tions, which in those days were the occasion of pleasant social gatherings, were their contribu- tions.
As the wife of the Portuguese Consul General, Mrs. Romano, while the embodiment of modesty, played the part of an ideal hostess in their unique residence, then known as "Duart," at the junction of Arbuthnot and Caine Roads, just below the Catholic Cathedral in Gleneally. Her hospitality while lavish was unassuming. No guest at the luxurious consular residence left without a sense of pleasure and enjoyment.
