Mr. E. W. Hamilton (Superin- tondent of Imports and Exports) prosecuted, and Mr. Leo d'Almada represented all three defendants,
Mr. d'Almada remarked that ho had interviewed his clients in gool and it was clear from what they told him that they did not intend to plead guilty at the original hoaring, but that they merely signified that they understood the charge. Under the circumstances Mr. d'Almada naked permission to withdraw the pleas.

Formal evidence was given by Revenue Oficer Pearce and by the Superintendent of Imports and Ex- ports.
A witness introduced by Mr. Hamilton as one having the custody of the lorry, deposed to his being approached by a man with the view to the vehicle being used for the transportation of "marine licacies".

The drapings round the pillars had been partly, torn off in order that the liquid might be sprayed on to the stonework.
The
buildings wore
more
seriously affected than the pillars. An official of the Egham Urban Council stated to a Press repres sentative: "A spraying machine must have been used to commit the outrage. I am afraid we are going to experience considerable difficulty in removing the creosote, because it has got into the pores of the stone. There was some op- position to the scheme when it was mooted, but I cannot believe that any responsible person would commit ao wasteful and needleas a piece of vandalím. We may be able to redress the stone Inter and thus hide the daubs.”
When the Prince of Wales ar- rived he said: "It is a blackguard ly thing. I am very sorry indeed. that it has happened.”
For The People.
The Prince of Wales, who was received by the Marquess of Zel- Innd (Chairman of the National Trust), Lady Fairhaven, and others, made no reference In his speech to the outrage.
"It is a very happy thought in- deed of Lady Fairaven and her two sons," he remarked, "to have thought as a fitting memorial to her late husband, Mr. Urban Broughton, to present this historic site of Runnymede to the National Trust."
The Prince expressed sincere gratitude to Lady Fairhaven and her sons for their generous gift. Lord Zetland said that those menda were the most famous in the country. He was thankful they had been secured for the people for all time.
Soon after the Prince had left, workmen were brought from Windsor and began the task of attempting to remove the creosote stains with a special preparation: It is feared that the stains
