UPWARD TREND IN VOLUME

BUYING BRITISH

A steady improvement in the volume of the trade of the Colony, despite the cur. rent world depression, is re- vealed in the latest official statistics, covering the first half of 1932. In particular, there is a welcome advance in British imports.

The returns, issued by the Sta- tistical Branch of the Imports and Exports Department, show that the declared values of merchan- diso imported into Hongkong dur- ing the Arst half year of 1932 amounted to $335.4 millions, as compared with $367.0 millions in the first half year of 1931, while xports totalled $212.3 millions as compared with $272.7 millions.

In terms of sterling values, however, both imports and ex- ports showed increases, imports In the first half year of 1932 amounting to £22.1 millions as compared with 17.7 millions, Lund exports to £16,0 millions as compared with $13.2 millions.

BRITAIN'S RISE.

Excluding inports from Chinu, the largest share of the import trade was credited to the United Kingdom. In 19:0 the British

share was 9.47, in the fret six months of 1931 it was 12.07 and in the first half of this year it rose still further to 13,807,
