West had the opening lead. did not like to open away from his acequeen of clubs, but pre- ferred the gleen of diamonds opening, which dummy won with the ner The deure of hearts was ed from dummy. The declarer won with the nee, eatching West's qurch. The declarer immediate-) Hy led his six of clubs as West was marked with the ace. West went
up with the ace of clubs and re-i turned the jack of diamonds which the dummy won with the king.
The declarer then had a losing diamond and a losing spade, the other of which could be thrown on the king of clubs, so the de- clarer's next play was the king of clubs from dummy. East follow- ed with the four and here the de- clarer made a very shrewd dis- card. Instead of dropping his six) of diamonds, he discarded the five of spades. A small spade Was then led from dummy, declarer winning with the ace. Declarer'à next play was the six of spades, which was won in dummy with the king. Then in hopes of finding] the spades evenly distributed, the declarer led a small spade from dummy. When East played the jack, the declarer trumped with the four of hearts and then led his king of hearts. The six of hearts was led to dummy's jack, which picked up the outstanding| trump. You will notice that the seven of spades in dummy is good- and the declarer led it, discarding: his losing diamond.
He then won the last two tricks. with his two trump.
The declarer had nothing to lose in dropping a spade instead of a diamond. If the spades would) break three three, he could see an extra trick.

M. Herriot endorses Sir Simon's views as to the Lausanne undertaking, which was made for the sake of the peace of Europe and was directed against nobody. "We are happy to see the ad- herenee not only of other Great Powers but of smaller ones whom it
