VAUDEVILLE STAR TO GIVE LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT

It is long since local residents were offered the opportunity of seeing such a consummate artiste as Laura Guerite, the celebrated London vaudeville star, who is going to appear in the Rose Room: of the Peninsula Hotel In the very near future.

Miss Guerite has been for many years one of the highest paid artistes in her profession, and has sprend her fame in all the principal cities of the world. She has had the unique honour of appearing at three Royal command per- formances, having topped the bill at the Ambassadors Theatre, London, In 1916, when she appeared before three queens, namely, H. M. Queen Mary, the late Queen Alexandra and the Queen of Spain, in aid of the Belgian Red Cross Fund. arranged by the Duchess of Nor- folk, and later, at the London Coliseum before their Majesties the King and Queen, when she sang her famous song "Get out and get under", and what she con- siders her greatest honour WIS when she was commanded to appear at a morning party given at Mari- borough House by the late Quecu Alexandra and at that time she was starring at the Gerrick Theatre.

Miss Guerite has just arrived in Hongkong from a tour in India, and the management of the Penin- sala Fatal han persund.d her prolong her stay in the Colony, fiss Guerite will display her Ladents in many numbers which she has written and composed her- self.

The management of the Penin- sula Hotel is to be congratulated upon serving such high-class fare, und deserves good support for this enterprise.

FUNERAL OF PROMINENT CIVIL SERVANT

The funeral of the late Mr. Sydney Ashworth, who died on Tuesday, after a short illness, took place yesterday morning. Over 60 people followed the re mains to the Happy Valley Cenne- | tery, where Rev. G. T. Waldegrave officiated at the graveside. Fellow membera of the Government Marine Survey Offler acted as pall-bearers.

Included in those present at the graveside were Commander G. F. Hole, Harbour Master, and Mr. H. M. Hosegood, Assistant Harbour Master, representing the Harbour Office, Mr. T, T. Laurenson, Joint Branch Secretary of the Oillears and Marine Engineers Guild, Mr. P. T. Farrei), President of the Engineers Institute, Mr. T. Ram- say, of Williamson and Co., Mr. E. Cock, of the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Coy, Mr. W. Greig, Manager of the Taikoo Dock Company Ltd., Messrs. J. R. Kinghorn and R. J. Cameron, of Measra. Butterfield and Swire, and Mr. W, Russell, Chief Sur- veyor of the Govt. Marine Survey Office.

Other officers of the department present included Messrs. R. Hall, K. C. Hamilton, T. C. Stin, J. |Hunter, T. E. Jackson, N. Garland, Chan Fo-po, and others. Practi- cally every shipping company in. the Colony was represented. Re- presentatives of the Victorin Masonic Lodge No. 1020 and of the Kowloon Bowling Club werd also present.

London, July G. The operative clause of the Irish Free State (Special Duties) Bill, which will come up for its second reading in the House of of Commous this afternoon, auihorises the Treasury to issue AN order, levying charges on imports emanating from the Free State in order to make good the losses in which the United Kingdom public revenue may be involved, owing to the Froo State Govern- mont's fallure to implement its obligations.

Duties will not be imposed on goods in transit, via the Irish Free State Router.

No Withdrawal.
