The Bidding.

South was the dealer and open- ed the contracting with one dia- monel. West was not much inter- ested and passed. It is an easy matter for North to read his part- mer's hand. The least he could hold would be five diamonds head- ed by the queen, jack and the ace und king of heurta or the ace of hearts and ace of spades. There are no other missing cards that would make up the two and une- half tricks required for an open- ing bid. If South should happen. to hold five diamonds to the queen ten, he would then be required to bold not only the ace of hearts and the ace of spades, bat would also have to hold either the queen of hearts or the king of hearts.

With this information North can see only one losing spade or one losing heart, and therefore jumps the contract to six diamonds, East passes and now South must do a little

renaouing. Iris partner's ld of six diamonds assures South that he holds at least four dia- monds to the ace king, and he fur- ther must hold the king and queen of spades and the ace and king of clubs otherwise his bid of six diamonds would not be justified. South has one full quick trick more than required to make an opening bid-the ace of spades or the king of bearin. With either of these cards missing, South would still be justified in bidding one diamond, no with the addi- tional trick, South properly bids seven diamonds. It is certainly thrilling to alt behind two players and hear the bidding go one dia- mond, six dinmonds, Reven dia- monds which was the case when this hand was played.

The Play.

West had the opening lead and devided that his best chance was. to open trump, therefore the eight of diamonds was led which the de- clarer won with the jack and then picked up the other two dia- monds of West. He then led his ace and king of hearts and the eight of hearts was rulfed in dummy and the declarer spread his hand for the grand slam.

There is nothing to the play of the hand, but good sound bidding brought them to their contract of seven diamonds.
