The hand was played in a dup. licate contract match. North and South were vulnerable, Eust and Weat not vulnerable. The bid- ding was South one diamond, West one spade, North passed, East there spades, South passed And West went to four apudes, which bought the contræet.

The Play. North has the opening lead and openg his partner's suit-the nine of diamonds. The ten wna play- ed from dummy and South with the queen and returned the king of diamonds. West, the de- clarer, played the four and North discarded the deuce of clubs, tell- ing his partner not to lead clubs. The five of diamonds was played from dummy. South continued with the ace of diamonds, West playing the seven and North dis- carding the deuce of hearts, dum- my following with the jack of dia- monds.
North has told his partner not to lead hearts or clubs. Certain- ly he does not want trump ted; therefore he must want South to continue with a diamond, as this is the only play that will stop the declarer from going game. If South were to lead any other sult. West can pick up the trump, make his ace of hearts and his three good clubs.
But when South continues with
diamond, West plays his good eight spot, North trumps with the eight of spades forcing the de- clarer to overtrump with the king in dummy. Declarer then leads n spade from dummy, but is forced to play the queen from his own hund, which picks up North's jack. As the ten and nine of spades are both out against the declarer, he may as well try to pick them up. therefore he swings the ace of spades, catching South's nine, but the ten of spades in the South hand is good and this Is the trick that defeats the declarer's contract. All the rest of the tricks are good in the declarer's hand as he can discard his losing heart on the good club in dummy.
North, by discarding the deuce of clubs and then the deuce of hearts, informed South that if he would continue with his diamonds. North could trump high enough to force the king out of dummy and in this manner might establish a trump trick in partner's band.
