M. LEBRUN TO BE UNOPPOSED

NEW PRESIDENT OF FRANCE

Paris, May 9.

M. Painleve, the ex-war Minister, has withdrawn his candidature for the Presi dency, leaving the path clear for the election of M. Albert Lebrun, the President of the Senate.

The decision followed a move by the Radical-Centre group (the largest in the Senate), who ap proached both candidates and suggested that one of them should stand down to avoid an election at this time.

As the group is known to favour M. Lebrun, M. Painleve gracefully took the hint.
